OpenAI Will Give ChatGPT Pro and Business Subscribers Up to $500 a Month in API Credits, Explained Honestly

Nothing here is sponsored — no affiliate links on this page. Every fact below comes from OpenAI's announcement of October 28, 2026, as published via @OpenAIDevs and OpenAI's updated Help Center. We have not tested the credit claim ourselves, and this is researched analysis, not hands-on testing.

If you pay for ChatGPT Pro or Business and you also build with the OpenAI API, OpenAI just handed you a reason to stop paying twice. Announced on October 28, 2026, eligible Pro and Business subscribers can now claim up to $500 a month in OpenAI API credits — the Pro credit equals your tier price, and Business seats pool together up to a $500 workspace cap. It is genuinely useful, and it is also fenced in with expiry dates, eligibility checks and exclusions that will catch plenty of people out. Here is the whole picture, honestly.

🔍 How we put this together

We used OpenAI's October 28, 2026 announcement via @OpenAIDevs and its updated Help Center, as reported the same day. Where something is OpenAI's claim rather than something we have verified ourselves, we say so — and the eligibility and expiry rules below are OpenAI's stated terms, not our interpretation of them.
🏆 Verdict: For a Pro subscriber who already experiments with the API, this is free money — up to $500 a month of it. For everyone else, read the exclusions before you celebrate: the credits expire every billing cycle, they don't touch your ChatGPT limits, and Plus subscribers get nothing at all.

What you actually get

Pro: credit equal to your tier. ChatGPT Pro subscribers get monthly API credit matching their tier price — $100, $200 or $500 per month, up to the $500 cap. If you are on the top Pro tier, that is $500 a month of API usage bundled into a subscription you were already paying for.

Business: seats pool together. ChatGPT Business workspaces pool $20 per paid Standard seat and $100 per paid Premium seat, capped at $500 per workspace per month. A small team on Premium seats hits that cap fast; a Standard-seat workspace needs 25 paid seats to reach it. Either way, the credit lands at workspace level, not per person.

What the credits fund. The credits pay for API use — OpenAI's docs coverage includes the Responses API, the Agents API, Realtime/GPT-Live and the Images API. That is the practical core of the offer: prototypes, agents, voice and image features you would otherwise fund from a separate API balance.

The catches, stated plainly

They expire — every month. Credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, with no rollover. Unused credit does not stack, and the first grant may be prorated depending on when you claim. This is a use-it-or-lose-it monthly allowance, not a growing balance. If your API usage is sporadic, set a reminder to actually spend it — or accept that some months it will simply vanish.

They don't extend ChatGPT. The credits fund API use only. They do not raise your ChatGPT usage limits, and they do not cover Codex via account sign-in. If your frustration is hitting ChatGPT's limits, this announcement does not fix it — it fixes the other bill, the API one.

Eligibility is strict. Your subscription must have been active for at least 7 days. You must own the subscription or workspace, and you must own the API organisation receiving the credits. The same email has to be on both accounts, and the credits map to exactly one linked API organisation — you cannot split them across orgs. If your ChatGPT account and your API account live under different emails, sort that out before you claim, or expect the claim to fail.

Whole tiers are excluded. Plus subscribers are out. Free trials are out. Enterprise, Edu and legacy Codex seats are out. This is a Pro and Business offer, full stop — and if you are on Plus hoping for a slice, there isn't one here.

How to claim

Claim through ChatGPT's billing settings, or through the OpenAI Developers plugin in ChatGPT or Codex. The practical advice: claim as soon as you are eligible, because the monthly clock — and the expiry — starts with your billing cycle, not with your enthusiasm. And before you build anything that depends on the credit, confirm it actually landed in your API organisation: a claim that looks successful in ChatGPT but never reaches the right org is worthless until you verify it.

What this does not mean

First, this is not OpenAI making the API free. $500 a month is generous for experiments, prototypes and small production workloads, but a serious production app will burn through it — and then you are back on paid API billing, exactly as before. Treat it as a subsidy, not a replacement.

Second, availability may vary by country. OpenAI's announcement does not guarantee identical availability everywhere, so if the claim option does not appear for you, regional availability is the first thing to check — not a bug in your account.

Third, we have not tested the claim ourselves. Everything above is OpenAI's stated terms as announced on October 28, 2026. Real-world friction — how smooth the linking is, how proration actually works on the first grant, whether seats pool exactly as described — will only show up once subscribers start claiming. We will update this article when independent reports land.

What to do this week

What we don't know yet

None of that takes away from the headline: OpenAI just bundled up to $500 a month of API usage into subscriptions many developers already pay for. The developers who benefit most will be the ones who claim early, verify the credit landed in the right organisation, and actually spend it before the billing cycle eats it. The rest will read about it next month and wonder where their $500 went.
